Serve your neighbors. Build lifesaving skills.
Join a trusted all-volunteer team.
Montgomery EMS has protected this community since 1972 — entirely through the commitment of volunteers like you. No matter your background, there is a meaningful role here.
Volunteer Positions
Whether you are exploring healthcare, giving back locally, or looking for meaningful public service, there is a path to contribute.
EMT
EMTs are state-licensed professionals who provide pre-hospital basic life support. No prior medical experience is required — Montgomery EMS will pay for your training and guide you through every step of certification.
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old
- Pass a background check
- Complete EMT training (~220 hours); Montgomery EMS covers the cost
- Complete in-house emergency vehicle operations training after certification
- Commit to a regular pre-assigned weekly shift (approximately 8–12 hours)
- State-funded training requires a 3-year commitment to the squad
- Maintain standard membership participation expectations
Driver
Drivers provide essential support by operating ambulances, assisting on scene, and ensuring vehicles are prepared for every response. No medical license is required.
Requirements
- Be at least 21 years old with a valid driver's license
- Have an acceptable driving record and pass a background check
- Complete in-house EVOC training — classroom instruction, hospital runs, ride-along shifts, and supervised driving with experienced crew
- Commit to a regular pre-assigned weekly shift (approximately 8–12 hours)
- Minimum 2-year commitment to the squad
Associate
Associate members contribute to squad operations through administrative, communications, and logistical support — without serving in a clinical role. If you want to make a difference without becoming an EMT or Driver, this is your path.
Requirements
- Interest in contributing to emergency services in a supporting role
- Contribute to administrative functions, communications, or operations support
- Participate in squad activities and meet standard membership expectations
Cadet Program
Montgomery EMS offers a selective Cadet Program for high school students ages 16–17. Cadets work under direct supervision of a certified EMT or officer at all times and are held to the same standards as adult members.
Many Montgomery EMS cadets have gone on to careers in medicine, nursing, and public health. In recent years, multiple former cadets were admitted to medical school.
Requirements
- Be a current high school student, at least a sophomore, and 16 years old by the start of training
- Montgomery Township and nearby area residents are preferred
- Application period begins each December; spots are limited and reviewed competitively
- Work under direct supervision of certified EMTs and officers at all times while on duty
- Maintain standard membership participation expectations
Consistency Is Part
of Clinical Readiness
EMTs and Drivers are expected to take a consistent, pre-assigned weekly shift. Typical shifts run 8–12 hours. Your reliability directly affects patient care — our crew depends on you being there.
Members are also expected to meet broader participation requirements that support training, operations, and the public trust we've built over five decades.
